A Dual Band Microstrip-fed Slot Antenna

Posted onby admin

This paper presents a study of dual/triple-band simple slot antenna fed by microstrip line for WLAN and WiMAX communications systems. The first proposed antenna consists of a rectangular slot with rectangular-ring strip at the centre of a rectangular ground plane and microstrip line feed at the centre for excitation. This antenna is based on a rectangular form with a microstrip fed line for excitation, and consists of slots on the edge of the radiation patch to provide dual-band operation. The design and simulation of the antenna were performed using CST Microwave Studio simulator. A prototype of the proposed antenna has been constructed and tested.

Abstract

A compact dual- and wide-band cavity-backed slot antenna subarray has been presented in this paper. Ridged slots have been employed in the design to shorten the slot length. Four slots are fed by two feeding networks printed on the upper layer of a substrate for great design flexibility. The designed antenna has been measured and experimental results have shown that the 10 dB return loss bandwidth is 7.5% for 900 MHz band and 26% for 1800 MHz band, respectively. Because of its compact size and good radiation patterns at both frequency bands, this described subarray can be very useful for dual-band array applications

Abstract

A simple new design method to achieve a dual band microstrip-fed slot antenna is presented. It is shown that when two slot antennas are placed in series, the spacing between the two antennas can be adjusted to achieve an effective secondary resonance. The new resonance is found to be due to the mutual coupling between the two slot antennas. An approximate circuit model for the dual band antenna is presented to explain the dual band mechanism and to provide a design guideline. The model is validated with a prototype antenna that operates at 4.22 GHz and 5.26 GHz, which are commonly used as the downlink and uplink in satellite communications. Measured results show good return loss at both frequencies, and radiation patterns agree well with the simulations. The proposed antenna has a simple geometry can be easily produced using printed circuit board techniques for applications where compactness and multiband operation are of interest.
